What is Biffa Award?

Biffa Award is part of the Landfill Communities Fund, providing grants to projects to improve local communities. Our funding can fund new roofs for village halls, create safe spaces for younger people to play, fund new exhibitions that promote creativity and participation, and enhance land to protect nature’s recovery.

RSWT
Biffa Award is managed by theRoyal Society of Wildlife Trusts. As well as operating as an umbrella group for the 46 local Wildlife Trusts that have been formed across the UK, RSWT has a dedicated Grants Team that manages a number of different funds, covering broad environmental themes. The team does this on behalf of organisations, such as Biffa Group Limited, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Peoples Postcode Lottery and Network Rail. If you want to contact a member of the team directly, you can do sohere.

Landfill Communities Fund
The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) is an innovative tax credit scheme enabling Landfill Operators (LOs) to contribute money to organisations enrolled with Entrust as Distributive Environmental Bodies (DEBs).  DEBs provide funding to fully constituted, charitable or not for profit organisations with no share capital for a wide range of community and environmental projects in the vicinity of landfill sites.

LOs are able to claim a credit (currently 5.3%) against their landfill tax liability for 90% of the contributions they make.

Since its inception in 1996, over £1.6 billion has been spent on more than 65,000 projects across the UK.  For further information please visit Entrust's website or see HMRC’s guide to landfill tax.

Our funding themes
We have four themes - Community Buildings, Recreation, Nature Recovery and Cultural Facilities. Your project must fit in one of these themes.

Each category has its own unique criteria, so once you have decided which theme your project fits into, you will need to read the criteria for the relevant theme - Community Buildings, Recreation, Nature Recovery and Cultural Facilities.

If you are unsure about which theme your project fits into, have a look at some of the previous projects that we have funded here - Community Buildings, Recreation, Nature Recovery and Cultural Facilities. Alternatively, give the team a call to discuss your potential project.

What we fund

We fund a wide range of projects, from re-roofing community halls and installing new play parks to improving land to protect species and habitats, helping them to adapt to challenges like climate change.

We are passionate about building communities and transforming lives, so if your project will benefit your local community and you are based close to a landfill site, we would love to help you.

Your organisation must be fully constituted, charitable or not-for-profit with no share capital.

Although not exhaustive, we do not accept applications from local authorities, councils, hospices, hospitals, day-care centres, rehabilitation units, residential care facilities, allotments, nurseries, food banks, schools and colleges.

Priority is given to projects that demonstrate wider community benefit and need. We expect your building to be used by many groups regularly each week, benefitting people of different ages and demographics.

Applications for projects in places of worship must show that they serve the wider community, similar to a village hall or community centre attracting significant wider weekly group use. Funding will not cover fabric repairs or repairs to windows, spires, steeples, bell towers or any areas not publicly available as a community space.
