A Win for Whinchats

Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the Blacka Moor Nature Reserve spans 181 hectares within the Eastern Peak District Moors. It constitutes a variety of habitats including heathland, upland woodland, wet woodland, wetland and grassland providing a seasonal home to willow warblers, black caps, cuckoos, wheatears, pied flycatcher and stone chats as well as red listed whinchats.

There is a small population of whinchat on the reserve and the project aimed to increase their numbers by improving and protecting their habitats. The Biffa Award grant was used to rebuild dry stone walls, remove invasive rhododendron, install  gates and stockproof fencing, scallop woodland edge, carry out scrub control and restore of heathland giving nature that helping hand it needs.
