Fact File
Norfolk Wildlife Trust has owned Hoe Rough Nature Reserve since 1989. Next to this, the Trust recently purchased Beetley Meadows, a site hugely rich in habitats. Beetley and Hoe Rough are both Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and are one of four SSSI’s and 17 County Wildlife Sites located along an important river corridor. The sites are separated by a rare chalk stream habitat, and the meadows represent two of Norfolk’s remaining areas of wet unimproved grassland.
The grant from Biffa Award helped to fund river channel narrowing, planting of native black poplars, the creation of hibernacula for amphibians and reptiles and installation of cattle/footbridge, water troughs, grazing infrastructure, two pasture pumps, interpretation and way markers. These improvements will help put into action plans to protect three priority habitats and 10 species over the 23.3 hectare site and provide major benefits to wildlife.
