Fact File
Affectionately known to locals as the Little Blue Church, the 1894 iron church or ‘tin tabernacle’ in Leicester serves its community across generations.
The church had undergone external repairs and some internal work, including installation of an indoor toilet for the first time, removal of the old kitchen and the addition of an extension. But there was now no kitchen, no heating, the existing walls needed repair and redecoration, a new inner door was required, and the carpets needed replacing. Some extra funds were required to finish the project.
The church approached Biffa Award to fully fund this final stage. The £16,000 grant saw installation of a new kitchen, wall mounted heaters, carpets, an interior door and repair and repaint of damaged walls. The upgrade has made it more attractive to community groups and families. “All these improvements should see this historic building right for another 100 years!” Kath Haines, Financial Officer.
