Fact File
Not too far from central Leeds, you will find Adel Dam Nature Reserve. Set on the edge of a small lake and pond, the combination of wet and dry mixed woodland and open water habitats makes the reserve a valuable habitat for invertebrate species and boasts 36 species of tree. Visitor numbers have increased in recent years with people enjoying bird watching and peaceful wooded walks with views of the lake.
The site had minimal infrastructure. Paths could become muddy and occasionally impassable in marshy areas, forcing walkers to veer off the track risking damage and disturbance to wildlife.
Biffa Award funding was needed to deliver simple infrastructure improvements to the site. With the help of the £70,409 grant and hardworking volunteers, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust were able to install new boardwalks, a nature trail, a bird hide, a feeding station and a very impressive, carved wooden kingfisher sculpture.
